They may look the same but it's odds on that the tyres fitted on your tourer are different to the type found on your towcar. And you need to remember this when you come to replace them.
Most caravans still run on old-style 13in wheels although a larger 14in size was introduced a couple of years back as the former became harder to source, especially on the Continent. Depending upon your caravan, typical tyre width sizes range between 155? 195mm.
While in some instances you can use a standard car tyre safely, on heavier caravans you'll need to employ a more heavy-duty commercial vehicle alternative. It's imperative that you don't downgrade on a tyre's speed rating or its load capacity.
It's best to stick with what's recommended for your tourer. Upgrading with larger, faster or lower profile tyres will show little gain. If you fancy upgrading, then speak to your caravan dealer or a tyre specialist first.
Unless you cover lots of touring miles, it's unlikely that you'll wear a caravan tyre out. Remember, tyres should have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm. However, you should certainly consider replacing caravan tyres out of hand after five years anyway.
The reason for this is that sporadic use, plus being left to stand in direct sunshine or the depths of winter generally leads to the sidewalls cracking, weakening the tyre.
If you can, remove the tyres. If you can't, cover them up and rotate them occasionally so flat spots aren't formed.
Never take chances with tyres, both on your car or van, because when it comes down to it they are your only contact with the road. Enough said.
